Chapter 34 "School"

Chapter 34 "School"

The three formed a line, crossed the open space in front of the main building, and entered the open gate of the teaching building.

Lin Chen was the last to enter the teaching building. He had just stepped inside when the door behind him closed.

"Clang!"

"..."

Lin Chen remained calm. He pulled out a flashlight from inside his coat and whispered:

"Do you need the lights turned on?"

"Quite cautious," Lucy said, looking around. "Don't rush, listen."

The three stood in the darkness, listening.

Since the door closed, Lin Chen could no longer hear the rain outside. The background noise in the space was filled with a strange white noise, as if someone was gently tugging at his eardrums with a light veil.

The feeling here was very different from the outside, but Lin Chen couldn't quite describe the difference.

He focused his mind, feeling his own heartbeat and the breathing of Li Zhanyi beside him.

There's something there.

A fleeting, eerie blue light flashed in Li Zhanyi's eyes. She suddenly turned to her right and said:

"Two o'clock!"

Lin Chen immediately turned on his flashlight and shone it in the direction that Li Zhanyi had "predicted".

He saw a huge black creature peeking out from around the corner: its body was enormous, it looked like a praying mantis, and its two hands were covered in mottled rust.

And the head it poked out was a human head!

It was the head of the wounded soldier from before!

"Chirp chirp chirp...hehehe..."

The moment the anomalous entity emitted its strange cry, Lucy immediately grabbed a light machine gun:

"Da da da da da da da da da da da da da!"

The intense flames instantly engulfed the abnormal entity, which screamed and shrank back before disappearing around the corner.

Lucy stopped firing, but the muzzle still glowed faintly red, and the spent cartridges rolled on the ground, clattering against each other.

"Stained clothes".

"Above your head!" Li Zhanyi said softly.

"boom!"

The ceiling shattered, and amidst the falling dust, a cold light flickered silently.

Lin Chen grabbed the hem of his trench coat to cover his face and quickly retreated a few steps.

When he looked up again, a bright flame had already ignited in the darkness—

"boom!!"

Lucy's palm spewed forth flames that engulfed the mantis's body, causing it to sizzle and scream.

That's Lucy-senpai's "Grim Wisdom"...

Lin Chen didn't think too much about it. At this moment, his keen senses allowed him to detect the flaw:

As the flames burned, the mantis's twisted head opened its mouth, and a finger emerged from it.

The finger was shrouded in a faint gray tone, as if it were on a different layer from everything around it.

Lin Chen raised his pistol, aimed, and fired.

"Bang bang bang!"

Three shots shattered the finger in the man's mouth, sending up a cloud of gray smoke.

"squeak----"

The mantis began to disintegrate amidst its wailing cries, breaking into small, uneven, grayish-white pieces that gradually dissolved after falling to the ground.

"You hit pretty well, little brother." Lucy shook off the remaining flames on her hands, and the eerie blue light in her eyes gradually faded.

A hint of approval appeared in her eyes as she looked at Lin Chen; she clearly hadn't expected this newcomer to find the physical weakness so quickly.

Lin Chen didn't speak, but just smiled and nodded: It's best to act like an expert at times like this.

Beside him, Li Zhanyi opened his eyes, the deep blue in his pupils fading away.

"No attacks in the short term, deploy a stabilizing anchor," Li Zhanyi said softly, "to cover me."

"Um."

Lin Chen changed the magazine of his pistol, then took out a few bullets from his pocket, filled the previous magazine, and stuffed it back inside his coat.

Li Zhanyi walked to the center of the first floor of the teaching building, took off the stabilizing anchor from his waist, and pressed it—

"Click!"

A sharp spike pops out from the end of the stabilizing anchor, and its surface glows red.

Li Zhanyi bent down and drove the stabilizing anchor directly into the ground.

"Sizzle..."

As a faint blue light spread out, Lin Chen felt the white noise in his ears weaken considerably.

"Dimensional stabilizing anchors will delay the fall of space," Li Zhanyi turned to Lin Chen and explained, "As long as enough anchors are deployed, the subspace erosion will gradually disappear."

"Understood," Lin Chen nodded, "but...it seems you only brought one?"

"Yes, because we're in charge of getting things started. The Second Division will come in and set up anchors later," Li Zhanyi nodded. "The anchors have communication capabilities, allowing communication across dimensions."

As she spoke, she pressed the button on her headset:

"This is Rapid Response Division 1. Please reply upon receipt."

A brief static noise came through the headset, and a few seconds later, Lin Chen heard a reply:

"...This is Louis, I've arrived at the scene..."

"Why did it take you so long to arrive?" Li Zhanyi muttered.

"...I have an upset stomach again. It's been going on since yesterday. The food safety situation in Yudu is really..."

"That's really bad," Lin Chen sighed softly. "We really need to eat less takeout."

He has worked as a food delivery rider for a long time and has seen all sorts of terrifying and gruesome scenes while picking up food.

"New guy, let me introduce myself. I'm Louis, a technician," Louis's voice came through. "Enough with the small talk, how's things going over there?"

"The first round of combat has ended. It's not a typical anomalous entity," Lucy said lazily. "My suggestion is to evacuate the people and maintain the blockade. Once we understand its nature, we can try to take it back."

As the two were reporting, Lin Chen heard rustling sounds coming from the corridor to the side.

Almost simultaneously, Li Zhanyi issued a warning:

"There are enemies on both sides, be careful!"

Lin Chen reacted immediately, and with the sound of breaking glass, the RBAI-1045 revolver shotgun was projected onto his screen.

He flung open the magazine, inserted a dragon's breath round, and fired—

"boom!"

The dragon's breath instantly knocked the oncoming anomaly from the sky. Before the flames completely engulfed it, Lin Chen saw its appearance clearly: a human figure made of exam papers.

After firing that shot, Lin Chen drew his pistol and fired at the dark figure behind him.

"Bang bang bang!"

Three bullets, two hitting the legs and one hitting the torso, sent a dark figure kneeling on the ground.

This thing looks even more outrageous: its main body is a pencil sharpener, with purple flesh forming a spider-like body, and countless sharp teeth spinning rapidly inside the sharpener's mouth.

"squeak!"

The entity was clearly not dead yet. It suddenly launched itself forward, lunging towards Lin Chen—

"Bang!"

Li Zhanyi fired a shot, and the object was sent flying against the wall, shattering into pieces.

Almost simultaneously, Lin Chen finished loading the Dragon Breath Bullet and aimed again at the struggling test-taker lying on the ground:

"boom!"

The flames engulfed the person taking the exam, and with a roar, it turned into a white-gray substance and dissipated.

Lin Chen flung open the magazine, neatly and efficiently stuffed seven Dragon Breath Bullets inside, and with a snap, put the magazine back in place.

He turned his head and met Lucy's stunned gaze.

"You're really a newbie?" Lucy stared, wide-eyed. "I thought you were in an action movie, John Wick?"

"I just play a lot of shooting games," Lin Chen said calmly, "but it feels about the same in real combat."

In fact, Lin Chen was also surprised: his reaction just now was so fast.

The physical enhancement brought about by the projection of the Sky Tower was clearly more powerful than he had imagined...
