Chapter 1398 - 1392: The Gossiping Maids
Because a press conference was held, although it was Vanessa Quinn’s second time visiting the Lancaster Family, the security guard at the gate still raised a hand to let her pass.Vanessa drove herself, taking the asphalt road through the villa area directly to the front door of Violet Zimmerman’s small building.
In the yard, two aunties were sorting vegetables with their backs to the sun, chatting as they worked, not even noticing Vanessa walk in.
As she walked through the gate, Vanessa was about to greet the aunties, but thought better of it, deciding not to engage with the older maids.
"...Sister Zhang, no wonder the Second Master often comes here for meals, turns out he and the Madam..."
"Don’t talk nonsense, the Second Master is the family head’s own brother, so the Madam only takes care of him because of that."
As Aunt Xu was about to gossip further, she was interrupted by Aunt Zhang. The Lancaster Family was a prominent family, and many coveted the authority of the family matriarch. As helpers of the family, they couldn’t cause trouble for their Madam.
"Hmph, turns out you’ve been fooled by appearances too. I saw Madam and the Second Master joking around this afternoon. If they were a regular uncle and niece, who would act like that? They wouldn’t risk rumors!"
Aunt Xu said defiantly. She hadn’t been in service as long as Aunt Zhang and had missed the past competition for the family head position, so her job had been stable.
"Did you really see it?"
Aunt Zhang paused her sorting, and Aunt Xu sneered, "Of course, or I’d dare not spread it blindly!"
Seeing Aunt Xu’s disdainful expression, Aunt Zhang advised, "Sister, we’re working for the eldest lady, best not to speak of rumors. If a keen ear hears this, it won’t just be the Madam in trouble, we’ll be implicated too."
"I didn’t tell anyone else, just between us. If you don’t say anything, I won’t either, who’s going to bother the Madam?" Aunt Xu muttered defiantly.
At that moment, a warm voice rang out in the yard, jolting her.
"What are you two aunties busy with?"
"Are you a ghost, moving without a sound?" Aunt Xu grumbled discontentedly, wanting to say more but was quietly nudged by Aunt Zhang.
Smiling, she greeted Vanessa, "Miss Quinn, you’ve come, quickly come inside, the Madam is home."
"Yes, I know, I called Auntie before I came."
Vanessa smiled politely at the two as she walked further in on her high heels.
"I don’t know what the Lady sees in her, so fake!" Aunt Xu muttered at Vanessa’s back, ceasing only after another nudge from Aunt Zhang.
Knowing Vanessa was coming, Violet Zimmerman had been waiting in the living room, with Joseph Lancaster as well, with a piece of gauze still on his left cheekbone.
A fight between father and son, obviously the older was at a disadvantage. Evander Lancaster was young and strong, with faster recovery ability than the elder.
So while both were injured, Evander’s face showed almost no sign of it, whereas Joseph, despite not being severely hurt, had a large piece of gauze.
Seeing Vanessa enter, Violet warmly welcomed her.
"Vanessa, you’re here."
"Yes, hi Auntie, hi Uncle." Vanessa greeted warmly, pausing briefly at the sight of the gauze on Joseph’s cheekbone but didn’t ask further.
Knowing perfectly well the reason for Vanessa’s visit, Violet feigned ignorance. "Why are you off work so early today? Did you come just to see Auntie?"
"Auntie, our company is facing some difficulties."
Guided to the sofa by Violet, Vanessa immediately grasped her hand and said with grievance.
