Chapter 48, First Stop: Aunt's House!
"Forget it! Your dad has improved! We'll forgive him this time." Mom's lips curled up slightly, with a smug look in her eyes.
Indeed, as a housewife, she had been living a comfortable life for many years, with nothing much to do every day except wander around her home, her parents' home, the fields, and her sister's home.
Lu Chen looked at the little Sizi in his arms, who was so sleepy that her little head was drooping down, her long eyelashes covering her pink cheeks, and she was unconsciously clutching the bare cotton candy stick in her hand.
He quickly spoke up, his voice reassuring: "Mom, Dad has a point. Qingming Festival is coming soon, and going back to pay respects to our ancestors is the right thing to do. Besides, Sizi is tired from playing."
He gently bounced the little guy in his arms. "Look at this little sleepyhead, he'll probably fall asleep as soon as he gets in the car."
He paused, looking at his mother's still somewhat tense face, and added with a smile, "Besides, Dad said the scenery is even better in the summer! I'll definitely drive you there myself to a more beautiful place for a few days, just the two of us, or maybe we can invite your girlfriends along. I guarantee you'll have a great time, how about it?"
"Hmph, that's more like it." Li Qiu's expression finally softened after hearing her son's words. She reached out and gently tapped Lu Chen's forehead. "You're good at talking, kid. Let's listen to your dad and go back first. Anyway, the little guy has eaten, drunk, and played enough."
She looked at Sizi, who was sleeping soundly in Lu Chen's arms with a flushed face and even breathing, and her eyes softened again.
"Then it's settled." Dad breathed a sigh of relief and quickly took most of the bags from Lu Chen's hands. "I'll carry them, you hold the child. Let's head to the parking lot. As for the hospital—should I go pick up the lab results first? You and Sizi wait for me in the car?"
"Okay, hurry up." Mom nodded, straightening Sizi's slightly crooked collar to keep the little darling from catching a cold.
The family didn't linger and walked back to the parking lot along the way they came.
"Guoguo————" Sizi murmured unconsciously in her sleep, burrowing her little head deeper into Lu Chen's neck, finding a more comfortable position, and then completely drifting off to sleep.
The way it looked so dependent was just like a sleepy cat.
Old Lu strode ahead, while his mother followed closely beside him, occasionally reaching out to protect Sizi from being bumped by the branches of the roadside trees.
Soon, the family got into the car and headed towards the hospital.
As soon as Mom got in the car, she quickly called Auntie: "Hey, sis, we're going home tomorrow. We'll stop at your place first and then have lunch there."
"Okay, okay, I'll cook for you!" Auntie responded warmly.
Lu Chen couldn't help but sigh, "My aunt is so kind! She always lets us come to her house for a free meal."
"Your mom is lucky. She has a sister who loves to cook. Your mom is too lazy," Dad commented fairly.
"Hmph! What do you mean I'm lazy? Don't I cook all the meals? And when have I ever cleaned the house?" Mom rolled her eyes.
"Isn't that your job? You handle the home, I handle the outwards. And your cooking is way too easy!"
"I didn't dare do anything, but I still did it. I don't like cooking oily meat or fried food; I'm just too lazy to do it. It's too much of a hassle." Mom shook her head.
"Mom, but you seemed to enjoy your meal at someone else's house, didn't you?" Lu Chen teased with a smile.
"I didn't say I didn't like it! Who wouldn't eat it when it's readily available?" Mom tossed her hair.
"Oh right, I need to ask your aunt to make us some fried eggplant fritters and tiger-skin peppers. Oh, they're so delicious!" Mom dialed the phone again.
This haul yielded a lot of delicious food.
"Look at your mom, she even brought some vegetables." Dad was truly helpless.
As they were talking, they arrived at the hospital.
Dad went downstairs to get the forms, Mom followed to listen to the doctor's diagnosis, and Lu Chen held the warm little dumpling in her arms.
A little while later, Mom and Dad came back.
She looked quite relaxed; it seemed like everything was fine.
"The three of us are all fine, but Xiao Si has a few issues. First, he's deficient in zinc and calcium, and second, he has a genetic predisposition to asthma. But it's not obvious yet, and it can be managed. If we pay attention, it will gradually get better as he grows up." Mom said, holding the medical report.
"Oh, it's alright. I'll buy some iron, zinc, and calcium oral solution," Lu Chen said casually.
"The hospital prescribed it, take it at home first. It's a sweet pill." Mom waved a white plastic bottle in her hand. "One pill a day, and there are several colors. Look how pretty the pictures on them are!"
"real."
Boom! The entire dynasty began to tremble again.
"This little princess is really something else!"
"Is it heartless? What does 'gai' mean?"
"This is too light?"
"The little princess has asthma!"
What is asthma?
Li Shimin and Empress Zhangsun were also alarmed, exclaiming, "Our Prince Si is really sick!"
"That's why she was frail from childhood!"
"But the modern hospital got her medicine, so she should be fine."
"Thank God! My rhinoceros can be cured."
Empress Zhangsun clasped her hands together in prayer.
"Modern medicine comes in small tablets? That's so convenient. Si Zi is so lucky."
19
The couple felt relieved.
People from all dynasties were far from at peace; they were all reminiscing about the medicine that had appeared in the sky.
Cao Cao, in particular, thought that he wished he could get his headaches treated in modern times.
The car drove smoothly away from the hospital and headed towards the hotel.
As night deepened, the streetlights outside the car window cast a warm glow.
The little girl in Lu Chen's arms was fast asleep, her little face rosy and her breathing even, completely unaffected by the bumps in the car.
...
The mother sat beside her, glancing back at her daughter every now and then, then looking down at the lab report in her hand, muttering, "One pill a day, after meals—there are quite a few colors, Xiao Sizi shouldn't resist too much." She carefully put the medicine bottle into her bag and then tucked the small blanket covering Sizi in.
"Don't worry, it's sweet, the little guy will probably eat it like candy." Old Lu glanced at the car in the rearview mirror as he drove. "We'll leave first thing tomorrow morning, and we should be at Auntie's house by noon."
"Mmm," Mom responded, a smile unconsciously spreading across her face. "I just talked to my sister on the phone and asked her to make fried eggplant fritters and tiger-skin peppers. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Her tiger-skin peppers have a crispy, wrinkled exterior and a soft, flavorful interior. Paired with a vinegar and garlic sauce, they're absolutely amazing!"
"Mom, you've got a really clever plan. You've already ordered the menu before you even arrived," Lu Chen joked with a smile.
"Of course! That's what we go to her house for!" Mom said matter-of-factly. "Your aunt's fried eggplant fritters are also amazing, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a wonderfully fragrant meat filling. Dad, don't try to take them from me later."
"Look at you, so pathetic," Old Lu shook his head helplessly, but couldn't help but smile. "Alright, alright, it's all yours. Eat your fill. But seriously, your sister's cooking is truly impeccable, much better than some lazy people's 'easy' home-cooked meals."
"Hey! Lao Lu, there's something behind your words!" Li Qiu immediately glared at him and pretended to pat him on the shoulder.
Lu Chen quickly tried to smooth things over with a smile: "Dad, please stop teasing Mom. Auntie is a professional, and my mom is the MVP among amateurs. They're not the same, not the same at all."
A relaxed and warm atmosphere filled the carriage. Old Lu steadily gripped the steering wheel, while Mom leaned back in her seat, starting to plan what to bring her aunt tomorrow, muttering, "Go to the supermarket and buy a carton of eggs, some fruit, drinks, pork ribs, and preserved eggs—"

Lu Chen looked down at the little dumpling sleeping soundly in his arms, his fingers gently stroking her soft hair. He was thinking about how he would make sure to give Si Zi her medicine on time when he got home, and also make sure she didn't catch a cold.
