Chapter 5 Encounter with Indigenous Peoples
Chapter 5 Encounter with Indigenous Peoples
As the sun began to set, it cast long shadows on everyone.
The two brothers, Zhang Xiuwen and Zhang Xiuwu, were preoccupied with their own thoughts and walked quickly.
However, Wang Muning was still young, and after a day of sea wreckage and travel, his physical strength was already exhausted, and he gradually could not keep up with the pace.
Before long, the six people split into two teams, one in front of the other, and spaced several dozen meters apart.
Chen Feng realized this wasn't a solution, so he grabbed Wang Muning by the waist, sped up, and quickly chased after the Zhang brothers.
Wu Dequan was panting heavily, afraid of being left behind, so he gritted his teeth and tried his best to catch up.
The foreign woman, however, remained calm and walked slowly behind, seemingly unwilling to keep up with the others.
"There are people ahead!"
"Is that Feng Qinlan?"
The two Zhang brothers spoke at the same time, their voices filled with urgency.
Chen Feng looked up and saw a woman in her early twenties running towards him.
Her clothes were disheveled, she was covered in sweat, and she kept looking back.
Upon recognizing the Zhang brothers, Feng Qinlan's face flashed with joy, but this was quickly replaced by anxiety. She gasped for breath and shouted, "Run! The indigenous tribe has attacked the village and burned half of it down!"
"court death!"
"Kill all these natives!"
The Zhang brothers, their eyes bloodshot and teeth clenched, almost simultaneously drew their short knives from their waists, bypassed Feng Qinlan, and rushed towards the village.
They are still just teenagers.
That was too impulsive!
If there are many indigenous people, wouldn't the two of them be courting death if they went there?
Chen Feng shook his head inwardly, quickly stepped forward, supported the swaying Feng Qinlan, and asked, "How many natives are attacking?"
Feng Qinlan shook her head vigorously, her voice trembling with tears: "I don't know! Their people are everywhere, they came too suddenly... Last month we went to Manila to see the Spanish officials, saying that the natives were stealing our food, but they didn't care at all, and even said that the natives are also Luzon citizens, and told us to be more accommodating..."
She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, her eyes filled with grievance and anger. "If the government were willing to do something, how dare they be so arrogant!"
Not getting the key information, Chen Feng frowned and continued to press, "How many able-bodied men are there in the village?"
"More than twenty people!"
"What weapons do the indigenous people mainly use? Do they have guns?"
"There were knives and spears, and I heard two gunshots, but I don't know if they were fired by people from our village or by the indigenous people!"
"Does every household in the village have a gun?"
"The governor's office forbids the private possession of firearms, and I don't know exactly how many guns there are in the village!"
Hearing this, Chen Feng felt a little more confident.
The fact that the indigenous people were able to launch a surprise attack during the day suggests that their numbers were not large, otherwise the village would have noticed them long ago. The fact that only two shots were fired indicates that neither side had many firearms. After a fierce battle, the indigenous casualties must have been considerable, and it is estimated that no more than thirty people were still able to fight.
With his martial arts skills, as long as he is careful, he may not be without a chance of winning.
Thinking of this, Chen Feng immediately instructed, "Junior Sister, you and Uncle Wu stay here and find a secluded place to hide. I'll go check the situation first."
Wang Muning was about to persuade Chen Feng to leave first, but then she remembered her father's admonition to always listen to her senior brother, so she changed her words and said, "Senior brother, be careful!"
Chen Feng nodded emphatically, then turned to look at the foreign woman. After a moment's hesitation, he asked in slightly broken English, "What's your name? Where are you planning to go?"
Upon hearing a familiar language, the foreign woman was startled and immediately asked, "You speak English?"
"I know a little bit! But I'm not very proficient."
"Then why didn't you answer when I insulted you?"
"There's an old Chinese saying: If a dog bites you, do you bite it back?" Chen Feng's English became more and more fluent, after all, he had passed the CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in his previous life, but he still chose to say this in Mandarin.
The foreign woman's Chinese was also limited, and she didn't realize she was being insulted. She smiled and said in English, "My name is Marilyn, and I'm from New York State. But you, a country bumpkin like me, probably don't know where New York State is."
Chen Feng ignored the disdain that followed and extended his right hand: "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Marilyn."
"Chen, I'm not happy to meet you." Despite saying that, Marilyn still stepped forward to shake hands.
Chen Feng then pointed to the village: "I'm planning to go take a look. Do you want to come with me?"
Marilyn subconsciously touched the parchment on her chest, her eyes flickered for a moment, and then said, "I need to go to Manila to find someone, I can't afford to delay, and I can't help you with your affairs."
As soon as she finished speaking, she walked in the direction Zhang Xiuwen had pointed out.
Chen Feng shook his head slightly, not taking it to heart.
After all, he didn't lend a helping hand during the previous shipwreck, so it's reasonable for others not to help him.
Seeing that Wang Muning and the other two had found a bush to hide in, Chen Feng clenched his fists and ran wildly along the path.
Ten minutes later, he ran to a corner and suddenly a corpse appeared at his feet.
The corpse's face was covered in paint, blood and foam seeped from the corner of its mouth, an arrow was stuck straight in its chest, and a broken spear lay at its feet.
Chen Feng squatted down and reached out to touch the corpse's forehead.
It was still warm.
They must have come to chase after Feng Qinlan and ran into the Zhang brothers who were killed.
Chen Feng took a deep breath, picked up the spear with the end still attached, and continued his rapid run.
Before long, a strong smell of burning filled the air, mixed with intermittent shouts and screams.
Chen Feng slowed his pace, bent over, and slowly made his way towards the source of the sound.
At this moment, the Zhang brothers faced him, holding short swords, confronting three natives. The quiver that had been full of arrows was now completely empty.
Zhang Xiuwu had a cut on his face, running from his left ear to the corner of his mouth, and the blood that kept seeping out stained his shoulder red.
Zhang Xiuwen was in no better shape; an arrow was stuck in his right calf, and blood gushed out whenever he moved.
These two kids have definitely never heard that impulsiveness is the devil!
Chen Feng shook his head inwardly. Seeing that the three natives had not yet noticed him, he quietly moved closer.
Zhang Xiuwu caught a glimpse of Chen Feng out of the corner of his eye, his face lighting up with joy. He immediately shouted, "Brother Chen, make your move!"
idiot!
What the hell are you doing?!
Didn't you see I was planning a sneak attack?
Chen Feng cursed inwardly, and before the natives could react, he suddenly threw the spear in his hand.
Pfft!
The spear pierced the chest of the middle native with perfect accuracy, and blood gushed out instantly.
Seeing this, the other two natives roared, turned around, and charged forward wielding their long knives.
These natives are so stupid!
Chen Feng remained completely calm, even a smile appeared on his face, because the Zhang brothers had begun to move.
The two men, each wielding a short knife, pounced on the indigenous man from the left and right, plunging the knife tips deep into his back.
"Brother Chen, how's our teamwork going?" Zhang Xiuwu said smugly, deliberately twisting his wrist and tearing apart the local's internal organs.
Zhang Xiuwen glared at him: "Cooperate my ass! Didn't you see Brother Chen was going to launch a sneak attack? Your shout gave him away!"
"Forget it, as long as we killed the natives, that's fine." Chen Feng waved his hand and pointed to the village billowing with thick smoke ahead: "Is that your village? The fire seems to have subsided; the natives should have retreated by now, right?"
"They've most likely withdrawn!" Zhang Xiuwen nodded, hesitated for a moment, and then invited, "Brother Chen, why don't you rest at our house for the night? If there's nothing else, my brother and I will take you to Manila tomorrow to find your Uncle Yang."
Chen Feng understood immediately; the man was worried that there might still be some remnants of the local tribes and wanted him to help keep watch. He readily agreed, "That suits me perfectly!"
