Chapter 761 - 492: Skeleton Mage, Frost vs. Undead!
"You’re a skeleton that has been slumbering for who knows how many years. Don’t be so arrogant."
Fang Zhou looked up, a brilliant smile spreading across his face. "All Undead, destroy the runes beneath your feet!"
He wasn’t in the habit of laying all his cards on the table at once; only a fool would do that. Even a lion uses its full strength to hunt a rabbit, so why would an intelligent person do any less? When it’s time to act, you must give it your all. The only exception, of course, was when facing Frost Mages. Those mages excelled at area control, possessing all sorts of chaotic crowd-control spells. These included Frost Nova, Ice Spear Skill, and Extreme Cold Arrow Rain, among dozens of others.
Fang Zhou was well aware of this. If he revealed all his cards at once only to be completely frozen and controlled by a single spell, what good would that do?
Yan Yan had once mentioned that places belonging to High-Tier Mages were littered with traps and mechanisms. The outskirts of this Mage’s tomb were already like this, so the main burial chamber was bound to have even more!
He couldn’t let all his Undead Summoned Creatures fall into a trap at once. The correct choice in this situation was to use a portion of his summons to bait out the enemy’s trump cards. This was by no means a foolish decision, because Fang Zhou didn’t have to worry about being instantly defeated by the enemy—he had an ultimate, life-saving trump card.
The Corpse Warriors raised their weapons and hacked at the runes beneath their feet.
But in the next moment, the entire Pentagram Array erupted in a blinding, blue-white light. The main burial chamber was engulfed in a sea of blue-white radiance, obscuring all sight. A terrifying storm of icy energy raged beneath them. Dense Ice Crystals materialized and rapidly solidified, forming countless Frost Spears. The Rune Array’s power then directed this downpour of spears to attack everything within the chamber.
Fang Zhou had anticipated this. As the Soul Shattering Magic Ball in his hand flashed, he summoned the Berserker Heroic Spirit, Olaf. This time, Fang Zhou chose the largest and most durable Corrupt Hatred as the vessel for the Heroic Spirit Summoning.
Olaf and the Six-armed Snake Demon Warrior immediately surrounded Fang Zhou, blocking the endless barrage of Frost Spears. Other Undead Creatures charged through the icy rain to join them, forming an absolutely secure protective circle. A few small gaps remained, allowing some Frost Spears to slip through. However, Fang Zhou was personally protected by several layers of his Shield of Death Protection.
In an instant, hundreds of Frost Spears materialized, followed by hundreds more. The trap in the main burial chamber wasn’t a complex or profound spell. The Pentagram Array was actually quite simple, but it was incredibly powerful.
A single Frost Spear could only inflict Bronze-level damage, but what about hundreds of them? Forget a Silver Mage; even a Golden-Tier Great Mage would likely need a long time to prepare for casting of this magnitude. The current Skeleton Mage was certainly incapable of such a feat. However, the pre-set Pentagram Array, fueled by the Mana from five oversized Naraku Energy Cores, made it possible.
WHOOSH! WHOOSH, WHOOSH!
The Skeleton Mage’s strongest, long-prepared attack crumbled instantly before Fang Zhou’s casually assembled Undead Defense Line.
The frenzied dance of Frost Spears lasted a full two minutes before finally dissipating. The entire chamber was now covered in ice, bearing the scars left behind by the spears. Hundreds of ice pillars now stood amidst a forest of various Ice Spikes and Ice Spines. They covered the four walls, the ceiling, and the floor, transforming the entire chamber into a world of ice.
The Undead Creatures on the periphery were almost completely encased in a single, massive block of ice. But Fang Zhou didn’t care. As long as he was alive, these Undead Summoned Creatures could be reassembled and resurrected without any true loss. Most importantly, he had successfully weathered this storm of ice.
As expected, the more powerful the spell, the shorter its duration. The same holds true for traps.
"You are worthy of becoming my Servant!"
With a loud bang, the coffin lid shattered.
Another Skeleton Mage floated up, this one clad in a black Magic Robe, wearing a Golden Crown, and bound by black-gray Chains. The air grew cold, a piercing, bone-chilling cold.
Gazing at the floating Skeleton Mage, Fang Zhou froze for a second before quickly processing the situation. It seems the one I killed just now was merely a Clone of the tomb’s master. This must be the main body. No, not necessarily. Perhaps this is just another Clone.
He didn’t hesitate. The Pentagram Array at the enemy’s feet had dimmed and the five Arcane Crystals had shattered. This clearly indicated that its energy was depleted and it couldn’t be activated again for the time being. With Ice Spikes and Ice Spines everywhere, everything else in the chamber had been destroyed, making it impossible for any other traps to exist. The Skeleton Mage’s Undead Guards were all in pieces, posing no threat until they could be revived.
His only remaining enemy was the Skeleton Mage right in front of him. Judging from its energy aura, although its Soul Fire was dim and indistinct, its mana fluctuations were only somewhere between the Bronze and Silver Tiers.
Since his Harvest Festival had been upgraded by the World Rune Gallows, it could now be stopped and started at will. It no longer had to expend all its accumulated Slaughter Charge in a single burst. The Harvest Festival still had a long duration remaining. Going all out, it shouldn’t be difficult to take care of this Skeleton Mage.
The Skeleton Mage must have other trump cards, but this is no time for cautious probing.
CRUNCH, CRUNCH!
A harsh cracking sound echoed through the chamber, as if countless tiny ice blades were slicing through the air. All the Undead Summoned Creatures were frozen solid, with Ice Crystals spreading across their bodies like crystalline armor. However, aside from the weaker Corpse Warriors on the outer perimeter, the Undead Creatures huddled in the center began to struggle under Fang Zhou’s command.
The ice had immobilized but not destroyed them. They were merely frozen, having sustained little actual damage. As they struggled, the layers of ice began to loosen, and the undead regained some mobility. Although their movements were slow, as if bound by invisible Chains, they still managed to slowly clear a path for Olaf and the Six-armed Snake Demon Warrior to charge, just as Fang Zhou had directed.
"Heh heh heh, still trying to resist, my little prize?" The Skeleton Mage’s voice seemed to emanate from the depths of the ice itself, carrying a bone-chilling cold.
He raised the skeletal Magic Staff in his hand. The skull at its tip was already cracked, yet it still radiated a horrifying, cold light. As he moved, more Ice Crystals condensed from the air, once again freezing the Undead Creatures that were trying to break free.
The Ice Attribute isn’t known for its Attack Power or destructive force, but its control capabilities surpass almost every other type of magic. The entire area, filled with ice, had become the Skeleton Mage’s personal Extreme Cold Domain. The frosty aura permeated the air, making it feel as if time itself had been frozen.
However, under Fang Zhou’s [Death Command], Olaf surged back to life. Its exceptional physical Attributes allowed it to resist most of the cold’s slowing effects. It transformed into a dark gray streak of light and, like a cannonball, crashed heavily into the Skeleton Mage!
"Fury Charge!"
Olaf’s roar echoed through the chamber. Its body, like a moving mountain, surged forward with unstoppable momentum. The purple Magic Robe on the Skeleton Mage suddenly glowed with a gray-black magical Spiritual Light as a reactive, persistent spell activated. A layer of Ice Shield materialized, blocking Olaf’s Charge.
The powers of frost and shadow collided, erupting in a blinding light. Olaf’s Charge was brought to a dead stop.
At the same time, the Six-armed Snake Demon Warrior also charged the Skeleton Mage. Its six chipped Demon Blades carved sharp arcs through the air, each one wreathed in a deathly aura. Its Attributes were already exceptional. Paired with the six Demon Blades and boosted by Fang Zhou’s buffs to his Undead Summoned Creatures, its strength was no less than when it had been alive.
However, two powerful Bronze Middle Undead Summoned Creatures were still not enough to defeat a Skeleton Mage at the Bronze Limit. This was no fragile Fire Mage or Arcane Mage; its Frost Specialization granted it incredible Defense Power.
